Once upon a time, it was an obscure term your dentist mentioned because you were grinding your teeth at night. They’d suggest a mouth guard, you’d nod politely, maybe even try it for a while. Like me, waking up every morning to find the thing thrown somewhere random in the bedroom. Under the bed. Behind the nightstand. Near the bathroom door. My subconscious clearly had opinions.

Scroll through social media now and everyone’s working on their jaw. Gua sha for your masseter, intra-oral massage, stretches before bed. TMJ has gone from obscure dental term to wellness staple. The attention is warranted, because jaw tension is genuinely causing problems for a lot of people, more than most realize.

The temporomandibular joint—TMJ—is where your jawbone meets your skull, just in front of your ears. It’s one of the most complex joints in your body, responsible for talking, chewing, yawning, and every expression your face makes. When this joint is tight, inflamed, or dysfunctional, the effects ripple outward. Headaches, migraines, neck pain, shoulder tension, ear aches, even dizziness. So much of what people treat as separate issues can actually stem from this one joint.

A lot of us are clenching without even knowing it.

Right now, as you read this, where is your tongue? Are your teeth touching? Is your jaw relaxed, or is there tension in the muscles around it?

Most people discover their jaw is tight only when they stop to check. It’s become a default setting, background tension we don’t notice because it’s always there.

We clench as a way to hold things in. It’s a physical response to emotional suppression; a way to keep anger from spilling out, to push down sadness, to manage anxiety without letting it show. The jaw becomes a container for everything we’re not expressing, and the body pays the price. Worn enamel, cracked teeth, receding gums, headaches that never fully go away.

Releasing tension in these muscles matters. The massage, the stretching, the Gua Sha, it can all help, but it’s only addressing the symptom.

The deeper issue is twofold.

First, posture. When your head sits forward of your spine it changes the mechanics of your jaw. This is true for most people, especially those who work at computers or look at phones scrolling all day long. Your neck muscles tighten to hold your head up, your suboccipital muscles at the base of your skull grip, and your jaw compensates. Poor head positioning places constant stress on the TMJ, even when you’re not clenching. The joint is working harder than it should just to function normally.

Second, what’s underneath the clenching. The inner anxiety, unaddressed. The emotions being held instead of felt. You can release your jaw every night before bed, but if you’re spending your days in a low-grade state of tension—swallowing stress, pushing through discomfort, holding your breath through hard moments—your jaw will just tighten again. The body is responding to something. Until you address what that something is, the pattern will persist.

This is why we need both: the structural work and the inner work.

So all those TMJ treatments flooding your feed, they have their place. Releasing the muscles helps, but if your head is sitting forward of your spine all day, and you’re swallowing emotions instead of feeling them, you’re treating tension that will just return. The release work becomes maintenance instead of resolution. You keep coming back to the same tight jaw because nothing underneath has actually changed.

At Ritam Studio, we work on both layers. Chain Movement addresses the postural patterns that place your TMJ under strain. Jonni’s meditation practices create space to meet what you’ve been holding—the anger you didn’t express, the anxiety you pushed through, the sadness you swallowed. When you have tools to actually feel and process those emotions instead of clenching through them, the jaw can finally stop working so hard and let go.

When your head is balanced over your spine and you’re actually feeling your emotions, the jaw doesn’t need to be the container anymore. The TMJ can let go and you’ll find you will need less of the short term fixes your feed is telling you to do!

Share

Your Tool For Today

Check your jaw right now: Let your lips close gently. Now let your teeth part slightly, there should be a small gap between your upper and lower teeth when your face is at rest. Let your tongue rest on the roof of your mouth, just behind your front teeth. Soften the muscles around your jaw, your cheeks, your temples.

This is your jaw’s natural resting position. If it feels unfamiliar, you’ve been holding tension.

Check your posture: Stand sideways in front of a mirror. Is your head forward of your shoulders? Is your chin poking out?

If yes, your TMJ is under strain before you even start clenching. Find 10 minutes for the Refine Your Posture sequence from the free Chain Movement Fundamentals course will teach you to find true head and neck alignment, relieving the mechanical stress on your jaw.

Check in with what you’re holding: Jonni’s meditation practices at Ritam Studio help you develop awareness of the tension you’re carrying and build capacity to process what’s underneath it.

Love,
Carla

P.S. Your jaw is a barometer for how much you're holding. Pay attention, it's telling you something.

This Week at Ritam Studio

<picture></picture>

<g>

</g><polyline points="15 3 21 3 21 9"></polyline><polyline points="9 21 3 21 3 15"></polyline><line x1="21" x2="14" y1="3" y2="10"></line><line x1="3" x2="10" y1="21" y2="14"></line>

Ritam Studio Members: Just released - a gentle therapeutic practice addressing jaw tension, TMJ pain and clenching patterns. Or when your chest tightens and taking a full breath becomes difficult?

We’ve all been taught to think of these as separate from our emotions, just physical tension, just stress. Your body doesn’t work that way, it is an incredibly intelligent structure that holds all the information your mind searches for. The mind and the body are inextricably linked, your body is holding exactly what your mind is processing, and if you don’t address both, neither one resolves.

This is why you can talk through your anxiety in therapy but still feel it gripping and restricting your chest. Why you can understand your anger intellectually but still carry it in your jaw and back. Why you can tell yourself you’ve moved on from grief but your immune system keeps crashing.

The body keeps score and ancient healing traditions have understood exactly how for thousands of years.

Traditional Chinese Medicine maps specific emotions to specific organs observationally. Thousands of years of watching how emotional patterns manifest physically.

Worry lives in the spleen. The spleen governs digestion, so when you’re overthinking, your digestion suffers. That churning stomach you feel during uncertain times, that’s your spleen struggling to process what your mind won’t stop generating. I see this often, someone comes in with digestive issues that no test can explain, and when we talk about their life, they’re drowning in decisions, analysis and planning. The body is telling them what the tests can’t.

Grief lives in the lungs. The lungs govern your ability to take in life and let go of what no longer serves you. When grief goes unprocessed, breathing becomes shallow, the chest feels heavy, immunity weakens. I work with people who’ve experienced loss years ago but never had space to mourn. They come in with recurring respiratory issues, and restricted thoracic movement patters. Treatment starts with their breath, and bringing awareness to their deeper emotions.

Anger lives in the liver. When anger can’t move, it stagnates and you feel it as tension headaches, jaw tightness and pressure behind your eyes.

Fear lives in the kidneys. The kidneys are your foundational energy reserve. Chronic fear, that low-grade anxiety that never quite leaves, depletes them. The result is exhaustion that sleep doesn’t move the needle on, lower back weakness and feeling like you’re always running on empty. Sound familiar? In our culture of constant uncertainty, this is epidemic.

Most people don’t understand that the causation works both ways. The emotion affects the organ, and the organ affects the emotion. A depleted kidney makes you more susceptible to fear and a stagnant liver makes anger arise more easily. This is why addressing only the emotion or only the symptom rarely creates lasting change.

Through my clinical practice I’ve learnt you can’t think your way out of these patterns, as the emotion is encoded in the tissue. To change the pattern, you have to change the physical conditions creating it.

This is why Chain Movement works. We start at the feet and systematically create the conditions for emotional patterns to release.

When we establish true posture from the feet up, your ribcage can expand fully and your diaphragm can contract optimally. When we open the chest through proper alignment and diaphragmatic breathing, your lungs reach their full capacity, grief that's been sitting there for years finally has room to move. The rhythmic movement of your diaphragm massages your abdominal organs, supporting digestion and creating the conditions for your spleen to process what your mind won't stop churning. People often cry when their chest opens, their body is finally releasing what it's been holding. When we ground your feet and build foundation, your nervous system receives the signal that you're safe, your kidneys stop running on fumes, and that chronic low-grade fear starts to dissolve. When we create flow through the whole chain, anger that's been stagnating can finally move. Tension releases, circulation improves, and the emotion encoded in the tissue has somewhere to go.

The ancient wisdom tells us where the body holds emotion and Chain Movement provides techniques to release it.

I’m sharing this as it’s important for you to understand why your body responds the way it does and realizing that what you’re feeling physically isn’t separate from what you’re experiencing emotionally.

That persistent digestive issue might not need another specialist and that exhaustion might not need another supplement. Perhaps your body is asking you to address the emotional pattern creating the physical manifestation.

When you understand this map, you start to see your body differently. It doesn’t randomly malfunction, but instead it’s constantly communicating with you. Your spleen is telling you to stop spinning in worry, your lungs are asking for space to grieve and your kidneys are wanting rest from constant anxiety.

Your Tool For Today

Take a moment right now and check in with your body. Where are you holding tension? Now ask yourself: what emotion might be living there?

Stomach churning = worry spinning

Chest tight = grief unprocessed

Lower back aching = fear depleting

Jaw clenched = anger stagnating

This awareness is the first step to releasing what you’ve been carrying.

Love,
Carla
<p class="button-wrapper" week. This is for those who recognize the same patterns of self-doubt and second-guessing playing out in relationships, work, and major life choices.

Your intuition doesn’t live in the mind. It lives in the same tissues that are holding your worry, grief, fear, and anger. When those organs are compressed, depleted or stagnant, the subtle impulses of intuitive intelligence can’t be detected. You’ll feel disconnected from your knowing because the channel is blocked.

We start the daily practice with Chain Movement to clear the channel and restore flow so the stagnation moves. From this state, the practice shifts to Jonni’s guided meditation and intuition simply rises. You feel it the way you feel hunger or warmth, clear and immediate, asking nothing of you except that you listen.
<p class="button-wrapper" earlobes, jaw clenched and your body tight?

Your body knows things your mind hasn’t caught up to yet. When fascial tissue is restricted, people don’t just feel physically tight, they feel stuck in themselves, limited, bound by patterns they can’t escape. When fascia becomes mobile and hydrated, people report feeling more present, more integrated, more like themselves. The tissue changes, and their experience changes with it. This is neuroscience.1

I’m about to use a few big words that might seem intimidating, but just read them in context, they will make sense, I promise. Actually I’d love to hear you casually dropping “mechanoreceptors” and “insular cortex” at your next dinner party.

Your fascia is rich in mechanoreceptors, nerve endings that send signals to your brain, particularly to the insular cortex. The insula integrates body awareness, pain perception, and emotional processing. Research shows it plays a central role in what scientists call “interoception”, or in plain English, your inner sense. It’s your ability to sense and interpret signals from within your own body.

Studies demonstrate that interoception is fundamental to embodiment, the felt sense of being in your body, and to self-awareness itself. When your ability to accurately perceive internal bodily signals is compromised, your sense of self becomes fragmented.

This impacts your everyday life. When fascia is restricted, dehydrated, stuck, the sensory input from mechanoreceptors to your brain is altered. The signals reaching the insula are compromised, affecting not just your perception of your body but your subjective experience of being in your body. You feel disconnected, fragmented, trapped. This may feel like you’re living slightly outside yourself.

When fascia is free, mobile, hydrated, responsive, your body can process sensory input as a unified system, and the quality of interoceptive signals to your brain changes. This integration underlies our sense of being present, embodied, and whole. You actually feel like you’re home in your own body.

You can’t think your way out of restriction or talk your way out of it… I’ve watched people try (and I’ve tried it myself). The pattern is encoded in the tissue, and the sensory signals are compromised. The only way to change the input is to change the tissue.

This is why Chain Movement creates the shifts it does and why people are often surprised by how they feel afterward. When you work through a sequence that starts at your feet and systematically addresses the entire fascial chain, you’re restoring mobility to tissue that’s been stuck, giving your nervous system new information about what’s possible. The sustained engagement in true posture allows mechanoreceptors to send different signals to your brain. The emphasis on diaphragmatic breathing mobilizes fascial tissue from the inside out. The conscious attention you bring enhances proprioceptive signals, helping your brain update its internal maps of your body.

People who practice Chain Movement consistently report increased sense of being present in their body, feeling more integrated rather than fragmented, better proprioception, and sometimes unexpected emotional releases as tissue that was holding patterns finally lets go. They describe feeling more like themselves. which from a neuroscience perspective means their interoceptive system is functioning more coherently. (Translation: your body and brain are finally having a clear conversation.)

At Ritam Studio, we approach this from both directions. Jonni’s meditation practices train the awareness to notice interoceptive signals, to recognize what you’re holding, where you’re gripping, how your internal state is manifesting physically. Chain Movement creates the physical conditions for those signals to change. Together, they address both the hardware and software of embodiment: the tissue that sends the signals and the consciousness that interprets them.

Signs of Compromised Interoception:

Areas of your body you can’t quite feel or access

Feeling fragmented rather than integrated

Difficulty sensing where your body is in space

A sense of being trapped or disconnected from yourself

Share

Your Tool For Today

Practice: Interoceptive Body Scan

Stand in present moment stance with weight centred in your feet

Close your eyes and slowly scan your body from feet to head

Notice which parts feel clear and connected versus which feel fuzzy or disconnected

The disconnected areas are where interoceptive signals are compromised

Breathe into those areas without trying to change them—simply establishing connection

If you're tired of feeling stuck in your own body, if you're done with that fragmented sense of living slightly outside yourself, explore the Chain Movement classes in the Ritam Studio library. This is the work that changes not just how you move, but how you feel, how you perceive yourself, and how present you can be in your own time, disrupts the hormonal systems that govern your energy and vitality. Your body simply cannot regulate itself well from a position of chronic compression.

Our energy doesn’t come from willpower or caffeine, it comes from a complex network of glands in your body that produce hormones regulating everything from how you wake up to how you fall asleep, from how you respond to stress to how you digest your food.

Your adrenal glands sit atop your kidneys and are responsible for producing cortisol, your primary stress hormone. When you're chronically in a collapsed posture — ribcage compressed, shoulders rounded, breath shallow — your nervous system reads this as a state of threat. It responds by keeping your adrenal glands in a constant loop of cortisol production. Over time, this sustained stress signalling disrupts your body's ability to regulate itself, depleting the very energy reserves it's trying to protect.

Your thyroid sits at the front of your throat and governs your metabolism , the rate at which your body produces and uses energy. Chronic forward head posture creates significant tension through the neck and activates a sustained stress response. Because cortisol and thyroid hormones are in direct competition, when your stress hormones are persistently elevated, thyroid function is suppressed. Your body, perceiving threat, prioritises survival over metabolism, leaving you with sluggish energy, slow recovery, and a system that can't efficiently convert what you eat into fuel.

Your pancreas regulates blood sugar — the moment-to-moment stability of your energy throughout the day. When your nervous system is locked in a chronic stress response, cortisol signals your body to release glucose into the bloodstream, preparing you for threat. Over time, this repeated pattern demands more and more from your pancreas to manage the imbalance. The result is the dysregulation many people know well , energy crashes, brain fog, and that shaky, irritable feeling when you haven’t eaten. A body stuck in stress mode simply cannot regulate blood sugar with any consistency.

I worked with a woman who’d been exhausted for years. Her thyroid labs always came back normal, so her doctor said it was just stress. What I noticed immediately was her posture. Shoulders rounded, chest caved in, entire throat area compressed with her voice barely audible.

Physically, her thyroid was trying to function in a space that was shut down. Energetically, her throat chakra—the center of expression and truth—was completely blocked.

When we talked about her life, it made sense. She’d spent years in a workplace where speaking up got you fired and in a relationship where her needs didn’t matter. She’d learned to make herself small and to keep her voice quiet.

We worked on creating space in her throat and chest by establishing true posture from her feet up. She also started speaking up, small things at first, then bigger things like boundaries with family and advocating for herself at work. Her energy came back as she reclaimed her voice, both physically through alignment and literally in her life.

This is why you can’t just address the physical OR the energetic. They’re the same thing expressing differently.

Chain Movement creates incredible shifts in the body, starting at the feet and working up systematically — because your foundation determines everything above it. When your feet are grounded, your pelvis can align. When your pelvis aligns, your ribcage lifts and your breath deepens. In Chain Movement, we call this true posture: the alignment you were born with, before life’s challenges taught you to brace, guard and collapse inward. When you return to it, your breathing shifts from shallow and guarded to full and restorative. This one change begins to quiet the chronic stress response that has been suppressing your hormonal function — your adrenals stop firing on high alert, your thyroid is no longer competing with elevated cortisol, and your blood sugar begins to stabilise. Your hormonal system begins to dunction as it was designed to. This is how posture restores energy.

At Ritam Studio, we address both the physical structure through Chain Movement and the energetic patterns through Jonni’s meditation practices. We’re creating space for your glands to function while also addressing what caused you to collapse in the first place. This is why our approach works when other things haven’t - we’re treating the whole system.

Share

Your Tool For Today

Stand up and scan your body from the ground up:

Pelvis/lower belly - Does your pelvis feel centred or is it tilting forward, back, or to one side? Is your belly bracing or just hanging with no engagement? This area holds your sense of safety and security.

Mid-section/solar plexus - Is it collapsed or open? This area holds your sense of personal power and confidence.

Chest/heart - Is it caved in or expanded? This area holds your ability to give and receive, to stay open in relationships.

Throat - Is it compressed or free? This area holds your ability to express yourself and speak your truth.

Where do you feel most collapsed? Now ask yourself - is there something happening in your life right now that matches that area?

Love,
Carla

P.S. Your posture isn't just about alignment, it's about allowing yourself to be seen, showing up in your full capacity, and not holding back who you are.

This Week at Ritam Just like protein became the thing everyone thinks they need more of and are constantly talking about, people are all posting about their breathing practice. From ice baths to breath holds to box breathing before meetings and rocking nose clips (nasal dilators) all day long.

Although it’s trending, there are some key facets of breathing that are not being spoken about. If your ribcage is restricted and your posture is collapsed, you can do all the breathing techniques you want but you’ll still only be accessing a fraction of what’s possible through breathwork. You can’t breathe deeply if your structure won’t allow it.

Your breath is directly connected to your energy, both physiologically and energetically. How you breathe determines how much oxygen gets to your cells, how efficiently your body produces ATP (the energy currency your cells run on), and whether your nervous system is in a state that supports energy or drains it.

Most people are breathing in a way that’s keeping them exhausted.

Put your hand on your chest right now, then on your belly. Where do you feel your breath moving?

If you’re like most people, it’s high in your chest as a shallow breath. This means your neck and shoulder muscles are working overtime with every breath. These are your accessory breathing muscles that are meant to help during intense exertion but not for every single breath you take all day long.

When you constantly breathe this way, those muscles get exhausted, your neck becomes tight and your shoulders stay elevated. You’re getting less oxygen than your body needs to produce energy efficiently because you’re only using a fraction of your lung capacity.

Your diaphragm is your primary breathing muscle. It sits at the base of your ribcage, and when it contracts, it moves down creating space for your lungs to expand. When you breathe diaphragmatically - deep into your belly - your lungs can fill completely, oxygen exchange is optimal, and your accessory breathing muscles can rest. Deep diaphragmatic breathing activates your parasympathetic nervous system - the state where your body actually restores energy.

Now, if you’re a shallow chest breather, the opposite is happening. This type of breathing activates your sympathetic nervous system , your stress response. Even if you’re not consciously stressed, you’re just sitting at your desk or lying on the couch, shallow breathing signals to your body that you’re in danger. To respond to danger, your cortisol and heart rate stay elevated and your muscles stay tense. The cost of all this is a depletion of energy for you.

Breathing pattern is connected to posture. When your ribcage is collapsed, shoulders rounded, chest compressed, your diaphragm can’t move through its full range because it’s mechanically restricted. Even if you try to take a deep breath, you can’t access your full lung capacity because the structure of your body won’t allow it.

This is why you can do breathing exercises and still feel exhausted. You’re trying to change your breath without changing the structure that’s limiting it.

This is why we focus so much on alignment and structure in Chain Movement before we even talk about breath. When we establish true posture from the feet up, your ribcage has space to expand, your diaphragm can move and your breath can deepen naturally without forcing it.

We’re not teaching fancy breathing techniques, we’re creating the physical conditions that allow your breath to function the way it’s designed to. We’re training your body to breathe efficiently so that every breath is actually fueling you instead of depleting you.

At Ritam Studio, Jonni’s meditation practices teach you to notice your breath patterns and use breath as a tool for nervous system regulation. Chain Movement creates the structural capacity for your breath to actually change. Together, they address both the awareness and the physical conditions needed for breath to become medicine.

Share

Your Tool For Today

Diaphragmatic Breathing Practice: Lie on your back with your knees bent and feet flat on the floor. Place one hand on your chest and one on your belly. Breathe in slowly through your nose, sending the breath down so the hand on your belly rises while the hand on your chest stays relatively still. Exhale slowly through your mouth, making the exhale a little longer than the inhale, feeling your belly soften back down. Repeat for 10 breaths.

This is how your body is designed to breathe. If you find it difficult to keep the breath low in your belly, or your chest keeps lifting, your ribcage and posture are likely restricting your diaphragm’s movement.

To sustain this kind of breathing throughout your day, you need the structural alignment that allows it. Below, you’ll find the Refine your Posture video from our Chain Movement library. It teaches you exactly how to find that alignment, and once you have it, deep breathing becomes natural instead of effortful.

Love,
Carla

P.S. Breathwork isn't a trend to dismiss, it's ancient wisdom finally getting mainstream attention. Don’t miss the deeper work that often gets lost in the hype of trends. The real transformation happens when you address both the breath and the body that's breathing.

This Week at Ritam Studio

Ritam Studio Members: have you tried our Power Minutes classes yet? hours. What’s missing is an understanding that restriction in fascia doesn’t work the way restriction in muscles does.

Fascia is a continuous web of connective tissue that wraps every structure in your body, creating one unbroken system from head to feet. This is why your ankle injury might be causing neck pain, pull on fascia in one place and it affects the entire chain. This understanding is at the heart of why I created Chain Movement to start at the feet and work upward through the whole system.

How Fascia Holds Your Patterns

Fascia is made primarily of collagen, and wherever you repeatedly place stress, through posture, movement, or lack of movement, fibroblasts produce collagen fibres along those lines of force. The organization of collagen adapts to the mechanical forces your tissue experiences, with fibres orienting themselves in the direction of habitual loading. This is how patterns become structural over time.

Every time you hunch your shoulders, collagen deposits to support that position. Every time your head stoops forward and your chest collapses, fascia adapts by organizing around that shape. Over time, the tissue loses its ability to glide and slide because fibrous cross-links develop between collagen fibres, making fascia less elastic and more resistant to change.

This is why stretching doesn’t create lasting change, you’re temporarily lengthening tissue without addressing the underlying pattern encoded in the collagen organization. Research even suggests emotional trauma may alter collagen structure into what scientists call an “emotional scar.” The body doesn’t just hold your posture, it holds your history.

I see this in my clinical practice all the time, an example recently was a woman who came to me with hip tightness that she couldn’t release. After my hands on bodywork, we moved to the mat for a Chain Movement sequence focused on her hips. She started crying unexpectedly (for her, but expectedly for me!). Her hip wasn’t just tight from sitting, it was holding years of unprocessed experience. When the tissue finally began to release, so did what had been stored there.

Fascia responds to sustained, conscious load rather than quick stretches. It needs hydration from movement, the right balance of tension and release, and your attention, because mindful movement creates richer sensory input that helps your nervous system update stuck patterns.

Chain Movement addresses every aspect of this. We start at the feet because restriction in your foundation propagates upward through the entire system. When your feet are properly grounded, everything above can organize around a stable base instead of compensating from instability. From this foundation, we work on true posture, finding alignment where your skeletal structure is optimally stacked so your muscles can function at their ideal length-tension relationships, creating maximum power with minimal effort, while also allowing fascial tissue to organize efficiently.

We place strong emphasis on diaphragmatic breathing, research shows it creates pressure changes that distribute fluid through the fascial network, promoting hydration and mobility throughout the body. Your diaphragm connects to fascia from your ribcage to your pelvic floor, making breath a powerful tool for mobilizing tissue from the inside out.

The sustained holds in Chain Movement classes give fascial tissue the time it needs to reorganize. When you hold a position with conscious engagement, maintaining the right tension without gripping, you’re creating the mechanical stimulus that tells fibroblasts to remodel the collagen architecture. The awareness you bring enhances proprioceptive signals to your brain, helping your nervous system recognize that new patterns are possible.

This is whole-body integration, which is why Chain Movement addresses the entire fascial chain rather than isolated tightness. Your body is one continuous system, and lasting change requires addressing patterns throughout that system.

At Ritam Studio, Jonni’s meditation develops awareness of what patterns you’re holding, while Chain Movement creates the physical conditions for release. Together, this addresses the whole system: the nervous system that creates patterns, the tissue that holds them, and the consciousness that can choose differently.

Signs Your Fascia Needs Attention:

Tightness returns immediately after stretching

A feeling of disconnection from certain body parts

Feeling limited in your body without clear cause—not weak or injured, just restricted/stuck

Feeling older than your years

What Chain Movement Addresses:

Foundation work: Starting at the feet to address the entire fascial chain

True posture: Finding alignment where fascia organizes efficiently

Sustained engagement: Holding positions for tissue to reorganize

Breath integration: Creating pressure changes that hydrate fascia

Conscious movement: Enhancing signals that support pattern change

Whole-body approach: Addressing the interconnected system

Share

Your Tool For Today

Practice: Diaphragmatic Breathing (5 minutes)

Place both hands on your lower ribs

Inhale deeply. Your heart beats, your breath flows, your cells regenerate, life is motion, even when you think you’re standing perfectly still.

In Chain Movement, when we hold a plank, pause in downward dog, or rest in child’s pose, we’re not actually static. Our consciousness remains in motion, feeling, adjusting, finding the sweet spot. There’s a constant dance happening between awareness and form.

Most people think good posture means finding the “right” position and locking it in place. True posture is actually fluid, it breathes, responds, and continuously fine-tunes itself. This is the art of authentic alignment: it’s never rigid, never fixed.

I used to approach holds like I was trying to freeze myself into a perfect statue. The more I forced stillness, the more tension I created. When I learned to allow micro-movements and subtle adjustments within the poses, everything changed. The “stillness” became alive.

We’re training your body to understand that authentic alignment isn’t a destination, it’s an ongoing conversation between your awareness and your physical self. One seamless flow of movement, even in the pauses. One continuous sequence of conscious embodiment.

This changes everything about how you inhabit your body. Instead of fighting against movement and change, you learn to dance with it and instead of seeking perfect posture, you develop responsive posture.

This is how life asks us to show up: not in moments of forced perfection, but in fluid responsiveness to what each moment requires. The person who can stay consciously moving within stillness is the same person who can stay grounded while adapting to life’s constant changes.

When you shift your mental and emotional state by establishing true posture, that is your natural inherent posture you were born with that connects you to your Self, you remove the stagnant patterns that keep you stuck. Motion creates freedom.

Cultivating Continuous Motion:

Feel within stillness - notice the micro-movements and adjustments happening in held poses

Allow responsive posture - let your alignment breathe and adjust rather than forcing rigidity

Practice conscious embodiment - stay in conversation with your body’s feedback

Trust the dance - embrace the fluid nature of authentic alignment

Stillness and motion aren’t opposites, they’re partners in the same conscious flow.

Share

Your Tool For Today

Next time you’re sitting or standing “still,” notice the subtle movements happening - weight shifts, breathing adjustments, micro-balance corrections. Sometimes it does, but sometimes it doesn’t and there's so much value in the sessions that leave you feeling slightly undone, where emotions surface unexpectedly and where you discover muscles you forgot existed.

At Chain Movement, we expose where the weaknesses exist in your chain, those places where stagnant energy has been held and where old beliefs and emotions have created distortions in your true posture. We're not looking for your strong places; we're seeking the spots that have been hiding.

Most of my clients will attest to this kind of deep work. They think they are strong until we start targeting the small stabilizing muscles that have been asleep for years. Their body shakes, their minds race, and they can feel vulnerable. Those burning muscles? They were the weaker ones that had finally been activated and trained, neuromuscular pathways kicking in to wake up those dormant muscles.

This causes a release in tension in the other muscles that have been compensating and working overtime to support patterns that no longer serve you. It's like finally addressing the foundation of a house instead of just painting the walls, everything shifts and restabilizes.

When we establish true posture, stagnant energy begins to move and we strengthen these weak links in the chain. Sometimes this feels incredible, sometimes it feels overwhelming and both responses are information.

Chain Movement isn't just about physical strength. Every time you push past what you believed you were capable of on the mat, you expand the container of your self-awareness and you increase your confidence to remain stable within yourself when life gets challenging.

Working With Your Weak Links:

Welcome the discomfort - burning muscles and stirred emotions are signs of activation

Notice what's been compensating - where do you feel release as weak areas get stronger?

Trust the process - your body knows how to reorganize when given the chance

Connect to life patterns - how do these physical weak spots mirror other areas?

Your weaknesses aren't flaws to hide, they're there to help show you exactly where your power has been waiting to emerge.

Share

Your Tool For Today

Next time you feel physical or emotional discomfort, ask yourself: "What is this trying to teach me?" Instead of avoiding it, see if you can breathe into it with curiosity.

Love,
Carla

P.S. It's not about finding a compromise between the two; it's about discovering the place where they become one.

This is where Chain Movement thrives. In the barefoot practice of finding your true posture, that natural, efficient alignment where you access maximum power with minimum effort. This is where the magic happens.

I discovered this sacred space when I stopped trying to muscle through movement and started listening to what my body was actually asking for. There's a moment in every challenging hold where you can either fight against the sensation or breathe into it, and in that breath, you find both strength and ease existing together.

Your body holds the memory of this balance. Before the world taught you to doubt yourself, before experiences caused you to armor up with tension and force, you knew how to move from this centered place. Watch a cat stretch, pure strength wrapped in complete softness, maximum effectiveness with zero struggle.

As you rediscover this balance on the mat, something awesome happens , you begin to navigate life's challenges from this same aligned state. Not rigid, not collapsed, but powerfully present in your authentic self.

The person who can hold a challenging plank while breathing calmly is the same person who can handle a difficult conversation without losing their center. The ability to stay soft within strength, present within challenge, becomes your superpower.

Finding Your Flow Between:

Notice when you're forcing - where are you gripping or pushing beyond what's needed?

Find strength in softness - can you engage your muscles while keeping your breath flowing?

Practice dynamic ease - look for the minimum effort that creates maximum stability

Trust your body's memory - it remembers how to move with both power and grace

This isn't about perfection, it's about presence. and suddenly you notice your shoulders creeping toward your ears like they're trying to escape the conversation. That moment of awareness? That’s when you can begin to make a change; it’s your opportunity to bring yourself back into an embodied state.

At Chain Movement, we train your awareness to recognize when you've disconnected from your true posture, that natural, efficient state of being where you're most deeply connected to yourself. It's not about perfect alignment; it's about conscious connection.

Most people think posture is about looking good or avoiding back pain. It does do both of these things, but there's so much more to it. Start noticing the deeper patterns, how stress causes shoulders to climb toward ears, how self-doubt collapses the chest inward, how rushing disconnects us from our power center, leaving us feeling scattered and ineffective.

These aren't just physical adjustments, they're moments of choice. Will you continue in patterns of distortion, or will you return home to your authentic self? Every time you notice your body has left its natural state and consciously return to center, you're practicing being your true self.

Your physiology informs your psychology. When you stand with your chest open and shoulders relaxed, your nervous system receives the message "I'm safe, I'm capable." When you slouch forward with shallow breathing, you're telling your system, "I'm under threat, I need to protect myself."

This is why we practice, so that in life's challenging moments, you have the body awareness to recognize when you've left yourself, and the strength to return. The person who can realign their posture during stress is the same person who can realign their thoughts during chaos.

Cultivating Everyday Embodiment:

Notice the disconnection - where does your body go when you're stressed, rushed, or doubtful?

Use your breath as an anchor - conscious breathing reconnects you to your center instantly

Practice micro-returns - small moments of realignment (and foot mapping - see the video below) throughout the day build lasting awareness

Trust your body's wisdom - it knows how to find its natural, powerful state

Change how you stand, and you change how you live. Your body is constantly communicating with your mind about who you are and what's possible.

Share

Your Tool For Today

Set three random phone alarms. While your mind can convince you that everything's fine, your shoulders are up around your ears telling a different story.

Watch how you approach a challenging sequence in Chain Movement, do you rush through it to get to the "easier" part? Do you hold your breath like you're about to dive underwater? Do you mentally check out when it gets uncomfortable, suddenly finding your grocery list fascinating?

I used to think I was pretty self-aware until I started really paying attention to my movement patterns. During challenging holds, I'd discover I was holding my breath, and my mind would start planning dinner. Meanwhile, I thought I was "just exercising." What I didn’t realize was that my body was giving me a masterclass in how I handle stress everywhere else in my life.

These patterns reveal themselves on the mat because the body doesn't know how to pretend. When life gets difficult, do you rush through conversations to avoid discomfort? Do you mentally disappear when emotions get too intense?

The beautiful thing about movement practice is that it's honest feedback in real time. Your hip tightness might be telling you about the boundaries you're not setting. Your rushed movements might show you how you avoid being present with difficulty.

As you become aware of these tendencies in movement, you gain the power to transform them in all areas of life. Every time you choose to breathe through a challenging hold instead of rushing, you're training yourself to stay present during difficult conversations. Every maintained posture builds integrity.

Reading Your Movement Patterns:

Notice your escape routes - where do you rush, hold breath, or check out mentally?

Practice staying present - use breath and awareness to remain with challenge

Connect the dots - how do these same patterns show up in your daily life?

This is why we train, not just for stronger bodies, but for more authentic lives. When you change how you move through challenge on the mat, you change how you move through challenge everywhere.

Share

Your Tool For Today

Notice one pattern in how you handle physical discomfort today. naturally. Now watch most adults attempt the same movement, and suddenly we're making faces like we're lifting a car. Somewhere between childhood and now, we forgot how to move the way we were designed to move.

Your true posture isn't something you need to create, it's something you need to remember. With Chain Movement, we strip away the artificial. Barefoot on the mat, we peel back layers of learned tension, compensations, and habits that have distorted your body's natural wisdom.

True posture is your birthright, that dynamic, powerful, effortless state where your body moves with maximum efficiency and minimal effort. You had it once. Your body remembers, even if your mind has forgotten how to get out of the way.

As your muscles work andyour breath deepens, notice where you're fighting against yourself. Where are you gripping unnecessarily? Where are you disconnecting from your power? These aren't weaknesses to fix, they're invitations to return to what's natural.

These physical patterns mirror your life patterns. The way you hold tension in your jaw might reflect how you clench through difficult conversations. The way you disconnect from your breath during a challenge might mirror how you abandon yourself when life gets overwhelming.

Each time you return to your authentic alignment during practice, you're creating a pathway back to your authentic self beyond the mat. This is why Chain Movement feels different: we're not building something new; we're uncovering what was always there.

Returning to Your Natural Power:

Notice the unnecessary - where are you adding tension or effort that isn't needed?

Trust your body's wisdom - your bones know how to stack, your muscles know how to support

Move like you're meant to - reconnect with the efficiency you were born with

When you rediscover the natural power that's always been yours, movement becomes a homecoming rather than a struggle.

Share

Your Tool For Today

Notice where you're fighting against yourself today. familiar slouch. But you don't. You breathe, realign, and hold your form. This moment, when your body wants to quit but you choose integrity instead, is where real transformation happens.

Your posture under physical challenge reveals everything. When your muscles burn and fatigue sets in, do you collapse? Or do you maintain your form? This isn't just about exercise, it's about who you become when things get difficult.

With Chain Movement, we don't just build strength, we build intentional strength that honors your true posture through bodyweight movement. Every movement maintained despite the burn is training for something much bigger than physical fitness.

I grew up with four brothers, all professional footballers, and in those days training was about pushing through pain and getting results at any cost. I used to emulate how my brothers trained, collapsing my form, holding my breath, and powering through with sheer force. It's through my work in physiotherapy and teaching movement that I could understand the deeper meaning behind form when training, and I began to realize I was abandoning my center when things got challenging and muscling through instead of maintaining my integrity.

How you carry yourself on the mat directly translates to how you carry yourself in life. When pressure mounts outside the studio - at work, in relationships, during challenges - your practiced ability to maintain physical integrity becomes your superpower for maintaining personal integrity.

Building Integrity Through Movement:

Notice your collapse patterns - where do you give up your form first when things get challenging?

Breathe through the burn - use breath to maintain presence instead of forcing through

Honor your limits - true strength comes from working within your capacity, from your true posture

When you train with intention, hold your center, and move from your power, you’re building more than just a stronger body. You’re developing a stronger way of being in the world. One where you live authentically and true to yourself. This is what Chain Movement teaches.

Share

Your Tool For Today

Notice how you respond to physical challenge today.
